Falling wine prices hint at a hard landing ahead

The release of stronger-than-expected growth figures this week has reinforced hopes that the mainland's economy will avoid a nasty slowdown this year.

Unfortunately, steep falls in the prices of fine wine indicate that a hard landing may already be under way.

I understand that might sound like a ludicrous claim, but bear with me - it's not as silly as it seems.

The introduction of a Wine Investment Zone to this year's Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair reflects growing interest on the part of collectors in treating wine not just as a source of pleasure but as a financial asset.

The Wine Auction and Investment Forum at the fair's public day on Saturday is expected to be packed.

HK$4b wine hub opens if tax axed, trade says

A coalition representing the hospitality industry wants the wine duty scrapped to help Hong Kong become the region's first fine-wine trading hub.

The Hong Kong Wine and Spirits Industry Coalition also wants the tax on spirits halved.
