Rookie Ryu Hyun-jin outduelled Adam Wainwright and the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped their lengthy scoring drought to beat the St Louis Cardinals 3-0 and climb back into the National League Championship Series on Monday.

Australia will host Major League Baseball's 2014 season opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks next March, organisers say.

The matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will take place in the year of the 100th anniversary of the Chicago White Sox playing the New York Giants on a world tour just before the first world war.

There was an unseasonable chill this past week blowing across New England down to New York. Baseball weather this was not and the only thing colder than the temperature was the prognosis for the two teams shivering through opening day in Yankee Stadium. By the time the first game of the season between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees finished, the stands were virtually empty.

Just because I love baseball's opening day hardly means you will or should. Because it is equal parts illogical, innate and whimsical, I am not entirely sure love is transferable. I am no missionary and won't attempt to convert you to my love for baseball and opening day. But, please, indulge me for a moment if you could.
