The Chicago Blackhawks pushed Stanley Cup champions the Los Angeles Kings to the brink of elimination from the Western Conference finals with a thrilling 3-2 victory in game four.

There's a sign in the hallway that runs from the home locker room to the ice at the United Centre. It says "EARN IT," and it was sure hard to argue that the Chicago Blackhawks haven't done just that during an impressive start to the Western Conference finals.

Reigning play-off MVP Jonathan Quick made 25 saves as the defending champions the Los Angeles Kings advanced to the NHL semi-finals with a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks.

The Chicago Blackhawks spoiled the Los Angeles Kings’ opening day party when the visitors eased to a 5-2 victory over the Stanley Cup champions as the strike-shortened NHL season finally got underway on Saturday.

Jonathan Quick stood at the edge of the rink and looked up at the Staples Centre roof. Several large banners were rolled up tight against the rafters, just waiting to be unfurled.

Although the new ice was chilly, the Los Angeles Kings goalie warmed up at the sight.

"It'll be good to see those," Quick said. "And then we can finally put it out of our minds and get back to work."

THE Los Angeles Kings broke open a scoreless game with three third-period goals to beat the division-leading Vancouver Canucks 3-0 in the North American National Hockey League.

Kings goaltender Kelly Hrudey stopped 43 shots, including 17 in the final period, for his second shutout of the season and the 15th of his career.
