The Lakers started the season with a loaded roster and championship aspirations. They finished with Kobe Bryant leaning on crutches and Dwight Howard getting ejected, while their patchwork line-up staggered through one last blowout loss.

Just one day after Kobe Bryant had season-ending foot surgery, the Los Angeles Lakers kept their play-off hopes alive by surprising the first place San Antonio Spurs 91-86.

Dwight Howard had 26 points and 17 rebounds and Steve Blake finished with 23 points and four assists for the Lakers, who are 1-1/2 games up on the Utah Jazz, who play Minnesota today.

Bryant tried to tie the game on a baseline jumper in the final seconds when he collided with Dahntay Jones and came down on his foot. The 15-time NBA all-star Bryant missed the shot and dropped to the court in pain. He eventually got up and walked off under his own power.

Phil Jackson has accused the Los Angeles Lakers of "slimy" negotiations in their search to fill the head coaching position left vacant by the firing of Mike Brown.

Jackson said he met Lakers' brass for 1-1/2 hours at his home last Saturday and was then woken by a phone call at midnight on Sunday to tell him that Mike D'Antoni had been given the job instead.

The Los Angeles Lakers and superstar Kobe Bryant are chasing twin milestone titles as the 67th NBA season opens this morning (Hong Kong time), counting on two key additions to help them regain Western Conference supremacy.

With one more title, the Lakers can match the Boston Celtics' record of 17 NBA crowns, while Bryant could match Michael Jordan's six career championships.
