More than 310,000 holiday travellers crossed the border yesterday. The Immigration Department said about 180,000 returned and 130,000 left Hong Kong through the Lowu checkpoint. Eighty-eight counters there were opened to deal with the crowds.

Gun syndicate suspect arrested, five homes raided

A suspected member of a syndicate that allegedly offered firearms for rent was arrested yesterday when he returned from the mainland.

The man, 41, was intercepted at Lowu checkpoint when he arrived from Shenzhen. He was handed to the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, which raided five SAR homes in a hunt for other members of the alleged syndicate.

12kg of farm poison seized at border

A man, 27, was arrested for allegedly possessing 12kg of farm poison at the Lowu checkpoint after returning from Shenzhen. He claimed the drugs were for a friend who ran a farm in Yuen Long.

Lowu arrests

Two women were arrested for allegedly possessing pharmaceutical products without an import licence after about $2,500 worth of the products were found by Customs officers on a local resident, 46, at Lowu checkpoint. A woman, 37, was arrested at the airport after officers found 1,600 tablets.
