A Sha Tau Kok resident says the result of a village representative election in January should not stand, claiming the winner is not a genuine member of the indigenous clan.

Waste dumped on key wetland

Part of a wetland area that is home to a rare dragonfly in the northeastern New Territories has been trashed in the latest case of illegal dumping in Hong Kong.

A pile of excavation rubble sits about two metres high across 300 square metres of the property, which is inside the boundary of the largest freshwater wetland in Hong Kong.

Passarello shows his class again

Stefano Passarello continued his winning ways with a scorching victory in the 31st Hong Kong Distance Runners Club Half-Marathon at Tai Mei Tuk yesterday. Passarello ran with Erich Felbabel until the half-way point at Luk Keng, where the 27-year-old Italian dropped Felbabel on the hill back up to Wu Kau Tang.

Police seize hi-tech goods on cargo ship

Police have seized HK$20 million worth of mainland-bound goods, including eye-care equipment, from a Hong Kong-registered cargo vessel off Lantau and arrested the 71-year-old captain, but at least 14 smugglers escaped on four speedboats.

Oil pollution exercise launched

Updated at 5.50pm: A annual joint anti-oil pollution exercise was launched near Lantau Island on Tuesday to train government departments and oil companies to combat oil spills.

A marine department spokesman said the rehearsal - codenamed 'Oilex 2004' - was carried out in the waters off Luk Keng Bay, the northern part of Lantau Island.

Hill airlift

A police constable, 25, who collapsed during a 10-day Outward Bound course on the Pat Sin Leng mountain range was airlifted from a hill near Luk Keng Road, Wu Kau Tang, to Eastern Hospital in critical condition.
