Rebels in the volatile east of the Democratic Republic of Congo pulled out Saturday from the mining hub of Goma, the city they seized less than two weeks ago, sparking fears of a wider war.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged M23 rebels in Congo to lay down their weapons and leave the city of Goma which they seized.

Ban said he welcomed a joint statement by the presidents of the former Zaire, Rwanda and Uganda making the same appeal at a summit during the weekend in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

UN says Rwanda and Uganda backed rebel takeover of Goma

The Rwandan military is commanding and supporting the rebel force that overtook a provincial capital in eastern Congo earlier this week, a United Nations report said.

Uganda is also providing more subtle, but nonetheless decisive backing to the M23 rebels, the report added.
