Firefighters battling a blaze at a recycling plant in a Tseung Kwan O village yesterday had to lay hoses up to a kilometre in length in order to connect to the nearest water source.

Accused officer 'has personality disorder'

A police officer based at Kwun Tong Court who allegedly threw a rice cooker, phone bill, incense pot and other items from his 34th-floor Tseung Kwan O flat last year has a double personality disorder, his lawyer told Kowloon City Court yesterday. A report was called for on how the disorder would influence Fung Chiu-wa, 35, who is facing seven charges of dropping an object from a building.

Should Jackie Chan be granted land for his project?

I think the government took too long to respond to this matter.

I know that it is difficult to provide land for Jackie Chan to build a museum [containing his historic houses], because there are a lot of legal procedures that need to be considered, but it should not have taken 10 years.

A police officer was punched when he tried to mediate in a dispute between a flat owner and his 18-year-old tenant in a flat in Shanghai Street, Yau Ma Tei. He was treated for a minor neck injury at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Police arrested the male tenant for assault.

Tseung Kwan O shoppers spread festive cheer

A group of children in Tseung Kwan O spent this Christmas spreading warmth to less fortunate people.

Fifty children gathered at East Point City on Christmas Eve to construct a giant Christmas tree using presents donated to the mall by shoppers.

The shopping arcade set aside a corner of the mall to collect Christmas presents from the public.

Car careens across footpath

A courier escaped serious injury when a driver stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake while trying to park her car and careered across a footpath in Carnarvon Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. The car struck the courier, who suffered minor arm injuries, and crashed into a boutique. The woman's son, three, was treated for minor head injuries.

Customs officers arrest 11 during illegal fuel operation

Updated at 5.38pm: Customs officers arrested eleven men during a four-day anti-illicit fuel operation, a government spokesman said on Friday.

Officers of Diesel Oil Enforcement Division intercepted vehicles from Monday to crack down on illicit oil, the spokesman said.

I refer to the letter headlined 'Reporting smoky vehicles' (January 10).

If 'Name and address supplied' would make the small effort to attend one of the Environmental Protection Department's training courses on identifying smoky vehicles, then he/she could make a difference.

Chained by debt

A man chained himself to railings with a note saying he had debt problems, as part of a deal to write off his debt. A pedestrian spotted the 30-year-old on a pavement in Sau Ming Road, outside Sau Mau Ping Estate. He called police, who then freed him.
