New York Yankees star Derek Jeter’s announcement on Wednesday that this would be his final Major League Baseball season had leaders of the team and sport mourning a legend’s farewell.

Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka donned his New York Yankees jersey for the first time on Tuesday and declared himself ready for the intensity and pressure of Major League Baseball.

“I’m very happy to be a Yankee,” Tanaka said. “Now that I’m here and wearing this uniform, I really feel that I have become a member of the New York Yankees.”

Australia will host Major League Baseball's 2014 season opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks next March, organisers say.

The matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will take place in the year of the 100th anniversary of the Chicago White Sox playing the New York Giants on a world tour just before the first world war.

But if you are an acknowledged sinner and you find religion through guilt and previous misdeeds, it's usually embraced with the type of missionary zeal that obliterates any and all in your wake. Everybody is a sinner now except you.

There was an unseasonable chill this past week blowing across New England down to New York. Baseball weather this was not and the only thing colder than the temperature was the prognosis for the two teams shivering through opening day in Yankee Stadium. By the time the first game of the season between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees finished, the stands were virtually empty.
