The journey seemed to be taking forever. Manila, I was realising, is huge. It's strange that such a major city is off the radar for most people I know; no one thinks a visit is worth the effort.

Souvenir quest triggered fatal blast

An explosion which killed four people in a Manila suburb a week ago was triggered when bomb squad policemen, allegedly seeking an illicit souvenir, tried to dismantle an artillery shell by using a welder.

Makati over-building fears dismissed

More than 13 million square feet of office space is expected to come on to the market in Manila's two main business districts in the next four years.

If all the projects are built as planned they spell a 61 per cent increase in office space in the Makati central business district (CBD) and a 103 per cent increase in the decentralised Ortigas Centre area.

Still poor

It was with surprise that I read the article headlined, 'Finding a cure for Manila' (South China Morning Post, August 15), by Steven Knipp.

It seems to me that Mr Knipp did not go beyond the district of Makati otherwise he would not have written such a hollow report.

Launch left high and dry

Regular visitors to the Philippines know not to take anything for granted, but recent events in Manila left one group of Hong Kong visitors scratching heads in puzzlement and smacking dry lips.
