United Airlines is kicking the habit. It will soon join a growing number of airlines to totally ban smoking. All United's domestic flights, and those to and from Canada, Europe, Central America, the South Pacific and selected flights in Asia and South America are now smoke-free.

Kalmar lands Amazon order

Swedish manufacturer Kalmar LMV has received an order for container handling equipment from South American carrier Amazon Lines, including one piece that was shipped to Hong Kong for trials and customer evaluation recently.

NYK Line launches new joint service to Brazil

NIPPON Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) and the Brazilian carrier Flota Oceanica Brasileira are starting a conventional liner service from Japan-Far East to Manaus, Brazil.

Each carrier is deploying a semi-containership of more than 500 teus to serve Kobe, Nagoya, Yokohama, Pusan, Keelung, Hong Kong, Singapore and Manaus on a twice-monthly basis.

THE two orbs glowed in the beam of the flashlight like rubies, and my Amazon Indian guides inched the boat through the reeds towards our treasure.

Ozimar leaned carefully over the side holding a metre-long pole from which dangled a noose. Suddenly there was a wild thrashing in the water and I fell backwards, dropping the torch, and we were enveloped in inky blackness.

YOU could be in London, Vienna, Paris or Rome. The opera house is as magnificent as any you would find in Europe, except that it is on a smaller scale.

And of course there is the 95 per cent humidity which has faded the heavy, century-old stage curtain, and the canvas, in the shape of the base of the Eiffel Tower, over the high domed roof. Both were hand-painted.
