'Sexy Mandarin' sets tongues wagging

A new website that offers Mandarin lessons taught by lingerie-clad young women has come under fire from a women's group, which says the practice promotes harmful stereotypes.

Sexy Mandarin, headquartered in Hong Kong and geared towards Western customers who want to improve their grasp of the language, aims to provide lessons 'in a sexy and unconventional way'.

ESF parents revolt over proposed Shenzhen trip

An English Schools Foundation primary school is facing a revolt by parents angry and worried about plans to send 120 of their children on a four-day field trip to Shenzhen.

The nine- and 10-year-olds at Clearwater Bay School had expected to go on an Outward Bound adventure course in Sai Kung for their final year's school camp in November as other pupils have for years.

Mandarin Oriental International said it saw an unprecedented low level of occupancy in its Hong Kong hotel due to the Sars outbreak. At its annual general meeting at Bermuda yesterday, the company said the occupancy rate had also fallen at Singapore and Bangkok due to the virus and Iraq war, but the United States and Europe were less affected.

Placement extension sought

Mandarin Resources is seeking to extend the deadline for its share-placement plan, which should have been completed yesterday.
