Mango Margarita

Your choice of cocktail says something about you. A dry martini may suggest elegance and sophistication. A frozen fruit margarita implies something altogether more louche.

Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett's classic tequila-sodden hymn to the 'frozen concoction that helps me hang on', captures the essence and attitude of the drink perfectly.

Sweet and versatile

Mangoes are very popular in sweet Asian dishes - think mango pudding, lassi and yeung chi kam lo. But their sweetness can also act as a counterpoint to savoury dishes. Salads are the obvious idea - chop the mangoes up and chuck them into green salads, or salads with roast chicken or cold, cooked prawns.

An urban oasis three years in the making

The casual outdoor party at Langham Place's al fresco venue might have lasted just a few hours on Thursday evening, but it was three years in the making. On the lobby level, adjacent to The Place cafe and next to the bridge that connects the Mong Kok hotel to the mall of the same name, there is a lovely outdoor terrace with couches, tables and trees.

Sweet or sour

Mangoes can be mouthwatering in more ways than one; when unripe, the fruit has a sharp, acidic flavour that gets the saliva going. The unripe (green) mango is used to make refreshing Thai salads, dips and a delicious sweet and salty-sour Indian chutney.

Perfect match

Although mangoes are primarily a tropical fruit, there are many types grown in many countries. In this part of the world, those from the Philippines are generally regarded as having the most flavour, although the big and beautiful mangoes from Queensland are also popular because they're quite fleshy. But for real taste, you can't get much better than the small 'kidney' mangoes.
