Search abandoned for missing woman, 21, who fell down manhole

A two-day city-wide rescue mission to find a woman who had fallen down a drainage hole filled with poisonous marsh gas was abandoned yesterday in Changsha, southern China, the Today Morning Express reported on Monday.

Worker, 33, fights for life after falling into sewer

A drainage worker, 33, was fighting for his life last night after he lost balance, fell into a manhole and lost consciousness in a sewer in Wan Chai. A colleague, who went into the sewer in a rescue bid, inhaled an unknown gas and felt dizzy. He is stable. Both men are being treated in Ruttonjee Hospital.

Towngas says that if found responsible, it will compensate four pedestrians injured on Sunday by flying manhole covers blown in the air during an underground gas-pipe explosion. Three men, aged 63, 73 and 75, and a woman, 37, were hit by the covers on Chung On Street, Tsuen Wan. In a preliminary report, Towngas said one of its pipes had been leaking.

Alleged thief blows his cover

Police arrested a man suspected of stealing sewage manhole covers in Tsim Sha Tsui. A watchman saw the man, 48, pushing a cartload of metal covers at the entrance to the Palace Mall New World Centre in Salisbury Road shortly before 5am. He was alerted when a manhole cover fell from the cart and rolled along the ground. Seven covers belonging to the mall were found to be missing.
