Shares of China National Building Material slumped 12.18 per cent yesterday to HK$15 after investors were unnerved by falling profit margins at the country's second-biggest producer of cement and other construction materials.

The company's gross profit margin for the year to December was squeezed to 18.97 per cent from 20.11 per cent a year earlier, due to higher costs.

Brokers said investors were still wary of chip stocks after their disappointing experience buying into Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp two years ago.

Exchange seeks banks' view on longer trading

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing is consulting banking representatives on its plan to extend share-trading from four hours to seven, according to an exchange source.

The trading day now runs from 10am to 4pm with a two-hour lunch break. The exchange wants it to run from 10am to 6pm with a one-hour break.

Initial margins increased on Hang Seng contracts

The futures exchange has increased the initial margin for Hang Seng Index futures to $70,000 a contract from $63,000.

Brokers said the move would help to prevent traders from failing to back up falls in the value of their contracts caused by market fluctuations.

The HSI futures index plunged 690 points to 14,965 yesterday.

Government baulks at blanket margin-financier exemptions

The Government has rejected providing a blanket exemption to certain types of loans under a proposed law to tighten regulation of margin-financing companies.

The Securities (Margin Financing) (Amendment) Bill will place margin financiers under the Securities and Futures Commission's regulatory regime.
