Portugal revived their World Cup qualifying campaign by beating Russia 1-0, while Mario Balotelli was red-carded for Italy in a 0-0 draw at the Czech Republic that put the four-time world champions closer to next year's finals.

Mario Balotelli scored a brace on his debut, including a controversial late penalty, to secure a precious 2-1 win for AC Milan over Udinese and move the resurgent Rossoneri up to fourth place in Serie A.

Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini confirmed on Tuesday that Mario Balotelli is set to return to Italy to join AC Milan, who had announced his transfer earlier in the day.

Milan said the controversial striker would arrive in Italy on Wednesday and undergo a medical examination before signing a 4½-year contract.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini played down his row with Mario Balotelli and insisted he would give the wayward striker another "100 chances" at the club.

The Italian pair were pictured grappling on the training ground in an apparent bust-up on Thursday in the latest in a long line of incidents involving Balotelli.

Sergio Aguero's loss could be Mario Balotelli's gain after the Argentine striker went off injured during his side's 3-0 win at home to Stoke City.

The New Year's Day win kept Manchester City seven points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United.

It came at a cost, however, with Aguero forced from the fray in the 76th minute after apparently injuring his hamstring.
