Monti on Friday resigned as Italy's Prime Minister, opening the way to elections expected in February.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti resigned on Friday with his political plans still in doubt, paving the way for early elections next year in a lynchpin eurozone state still mired in recession.

Monti “handed in the resignation of his government” at a meeting with President Giorgio Napolitano, and will stay on in a caretaker capacity, the presidency said in a statement.

Silvio Berlusconi said he could call off his re-election bid if Prime Minister Mario Monti decided to run as the leader of a centre-right coalition.

"If Monti runs for leader, I would take a step back," Berlusconi said on Wednesday, a day after he criticised his successor for failing to revive the Italian economy and for being "too German-centric".

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti yesterday played down market fears over his decision to resign, saying there was no danger of a vacuum ahead of an election in the spring.
