Chinese boat owner says he was assaulted by North Koreans

Gunmen wearing North Korean military uniforms assaulted the captain of a Chinese fishing boat and stole the vessel's fuel, the boat's owner, who had been held for two weeks, said after being released.

Taiwan vows to protect Filipinos from attacks

Taiwan yesterday ordered all law-enforcement personnel to step up the protection of Filipinos on the island, after a suggestion that Manila might evacuate its nationals from the island after hearing reports of attacks targeting them.

Manila to apologise to Taipei over fisherman's shooting

Manila will send a senior envoy to Taiwan to apologise for the death of a fisherman killed by the Philippine coastguard, Taiwan's Foreign Minister David Lin said last night at a briefing attended by Antonio Basilio, the Philippines' representative in Taipei.
