Gold exchange opens doors to foreign firms

The 102-year-old local gold bourse has signed up a Middle Eastern gold trading firm, the first of the overseas companies it is planning to recruit as non-voting members.

Back in the 1980s, many Hong Kongers were migrating overseas because of the uncertainties that faced the city with the coming handover in 1997.

The mainland economy was not the global powerhouse it is today and there were fears in Hong Kong of political repression from the new masters-to-be in Beijing.

Exco member back after US treatment for cancer

Marvin Cheung Kin-tung yesterday attended his first Executive Council meeting in eight months after taking time off for treatment following a cancer scare.

Speaking after the regular Exco meeting, Mr Cheung, 59, said that during a medical last year, his doctor had told him he was at risk of developing early-stage leukaemia.

Marvin Cheung resigns from West Kowloon panel

Executive councillor Marvin Cheung Kin-tung has resigned from the consultative committee on West Kowloon cultural district for personal reasons, the government announced yesterday.

A source familiar with the situation said that Mr Cheung was in the United States recuperating after receiving treatment for an illness and that he may not return to work for some time.
