Education needed on eating disorders

British researchers have called on governments to consider meddling in modelling agencies and magazines to stop the use of skinny women on fashion catwalks and photo spreads because it encourages anorexia and other eating disorders among weight-conscious women.

Expert warns of new UK tax dangers

The flexibility that shipowners need for timing acquisitions and sales of ships is not reflected in draft proposals on the new British tonnage tax regime, shipping accountant Moore Stephens says.

The firm warns that the draft legislation contains a broad anti-avoidance clause that could cause companies to unintentionally breach the rules of the tonnage tax scheme.

Deficit seen hitting $7m

The Marine Department will suffer a $7 million deficit this year due to new measures to make the Hong Kong shipping register more competitive and cost-effective, a department official said.

Decline in HK vessel numbers

Hong Kong port received 10,802 ocean vessels with a combined capacity of 52.5 million net registered tonnes (nrt) in the second quarter of the year, down 3 per cent year-on-year.

In the same period, there were 10,974 outgoing ocean vessels with a total capacity of 52.4 million nrt, a 2 per cent decline year-on-year.

Nenaco to import two vessels

Negros Navigation Co says it will import two vessels from Japan, increasing its fleet to 18 and raising its passengers cargo carrying capacity.

Negros Navigation, known as Nenaco, said it would buy the Ebino, with gross tonnage of 6,823 tonnes, and the 7,057-tonne Miyasaki.

ACL upgrades services

ADVANCE Container Lines (ACL) has announced the upgrade of its present Intra Asia Service (IAS) with a faster transit time effective from March 1.
