An orgy of violence

Those Chinese living in Medan, in Indonesia, including myself, went through hell with the riots, which took place in this town in Sumatra. On the second day of the riots, the looters were only one kilometre from my house and everyone in the house was so scared.

The scale of the rioting was so large that the authorities could not cope.

Tourism rules to be relaxed

INDONESIAN tourism officials in Hong Kong are planning to further relax travel formalities to attract more Chinese visitors.

Certificate of Identity (CI) holders in Hong Kong are now allowed to visit Indonesia only as members of usually inflexible tour groups. Their visas are processed through travel agents in the territory. Groups must have at least five travellers.

QUICK and unusually lenient judgments are expected from the Medan Public Court, where a mass trial begins tomorrow for scores of men accused of participating in riots that swept through Sumatra's largest city in April.
