Gunman's brother charged with plotting Manila hijack

Gregorio Mendoza, the younger brother of the Manila death siege gunman Rolando, has been charged with plotting to take hostages on the ill-fated Hong Kong tourist bus.

Mendoza is accused of 'serious illegal detention', or conspiring to take hostages with his brother in a turn of events that casts last year's bloodbath in a new light.

I was in a taxi on the edge of Rizal Park when I heard the first gunshots. My heart raced as I wondered if anybody had been shot. The taxi driver assured me that the shots were fired by police to blow out the tyres of the tour bus. I exhaled a little, thankful that the crisis had apparently not resulted in bloodshed thus far.

Forget the draw, El Zonda can benefit from the pace

The barrier draw has again been unkind to El Zonda in the EWO Challenge Trophy (1,000m) at Happy Valley tonight, but the Tony Cruz-trained sprinter has struck some good form over the course and might have the tempo to overcome that disadvantage.

Still only lightly raced, El Zonda (Matthew Chadwick) seems to be finding his niche over the Valley minimum trip.
