Villagers create Legco ruckus in housing row

Rowdy New Territories villagers yesterday tried to mob Democratic Party legislator Albert Ho Chun-yan in Legco to demand an apology for remarks he made over a rural housing policy.

Thursday think tank

Five things we're all wondering about ...

1. New Civic Party formed ... Its manifesto: be more moderate than the Democrats and wear nicer suits.

2. Chinese fast-food high in sodium ... Maybe those barbecue pork buns are as dangerous as second-hand smoke.

3. Suzie Wong - The Ballet ... Dancers in cheongsam admit, 'Me luv tutu long time'.

Firemen cold-shoulder 'shoeshining' dinner

Firemen are snubbing a dinner party to mark the 130th anniversary of the Fire Services Department, branding it a 'shoeshining' exercise.

A group of senior fire services officers on Hong Kong Island said they were unreasonably expected to bring along a partner, doubling the cost of the function at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Wan Chai.

The apathy that makes expats quit

'If I had been encouraged to stay - just a few words from my colleagues or my boss - I wouldn't have decided to go. But I don't feel that I am welcome,' said a senior expatriate official who will soon leave the Government.

Mess just fine for visiting PLA team

The PLA delegation last night had a taste of the good life as enjoyed by officers of Her Majesty's forces.

Major-General Liu Zhenwu's 'familiarisation' with the British Garrison included an initiation into the venerable extravagances and etiquette of the Officers' Mess.

Police chief targets fears of handover exodus

Police Commissioner Eddie Hui Ki-on is taking the unprecedented step of writing an open letter to his officers to boost flagging pre-handover morale.

It is understood Mr Hui will seek to calm growing fears of an exodus of top officers because of concern it could prompt widespread resignations among junior ranks.

Challenge offenders

I refer to the letter by Duncan Lightfoot headlined, 'Awful mess', which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on June 15.

I share Mr Lightfoot's concern for our local environment.

Awful mess

Could someone tell me which government agency I can complain to about the rubbish which is created, and the street cleaners time that is wasted, by the real estate agents who every weekend fix their large paper and cardboard advertisements to every lamp-post and handrail along the entire length of Sui Wo Road, in Fo Tan, New Territories?

Such a mess

I HAVE no intention of wasting your valuable column space on the question of Filipinos messing up Central.

Order to consume 'gunfire' may raise soldiers' hackles

PITY the poor unmarried soldiers down at Stanley Fort this morning.

They will have been woken rudely at the dawn hour of 6.30 am (known in army lingo as reveille and pronounced, with the best Glaswegian accent, as ''revalley'') by a horde of enormous sergeants racing into their regimental living quarters with war-like whoops.

Dogs' mess a disgrace

I WAS most embarrassed recently while showing some visitors around town, when one of them stepped into a mess left behind by dogs on a busy street in Kowloon.

I strongly believe our ''Keep Hongkong Clean'' litter fine should be extended to those who allow their pets to leave a mess in the streets, as such practices only make the streets much more dirty and smelly.
