Frat boys need not apply at Grand Central Bar and Grill's newly-minted beer club. There will be no 'chug, chug, chug' or beer pong at the monthly gatherings in the restaurant's two-level space at Element's Civic Square.

Media Cafe brews up beer for Oktoberfest

A frothy, thirst-quenching treat awaits lovers of fine German ale at the Media Cafe during Oktoberfest.

The amber brews at this three-month-old restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui are all made on the premises in special 'micro-brewery' facilities.

The cafe is offering an all-you-can- drink 'Beer Buffet' to celebrate the annual month-long festival.

Those living or working in Quarry Bay have a new watering hole: East End Brewery opened this week as El Grande Holdings' newest venture, joining Grappas in Pacific Place and L A Cafe in Admiralty.

Their brewery in Aberdeen will be making two house beers available on tap: Aldrich Bay Pale Ale and Taikoo Brew.

CRE negotiates to take over breweries

Red chip China Resources Enterprise (CRE) is negotiating to acquire several breweries with a total capacity of more than 200,000 tonnes in central and northern China, its executive director said.

Huang Tieying said the breweries were in provinces where foreign beer investors were not very active, such as Sichuan, Jilin and Liaoning.

Home-brew pubs to come on tap

THE North American ''home-brew'' pub craze could soon be making a breakthrough in Asia.

Micro Brew Systems, appointed by US brew-pub giant J.V. Northwest as its exclusive representative for Asia, hopes to help get bars up and running in Hongkong and Singapore by the middle of this year.

The pubs will be brewing their own distinctive hand-crafted beer on site.
