Duty calls

Headset maker GN Netcom has employed an edgy, urban look for its latest Bluetooth device for mobile phones and portable media players, the Jabra BT3030. Ask mr Brain...all will be explained

How do telephones work? The telephone is one of the simplest modern devices. A very basic telephone would have three parts, a switch that connects and disconnects the phone from the network - generally called the hook switch, it connects when you lift the handset; an 8-ohm speaker, and a microphone which, in the past was as simple as carbon granules compressed between two thin metal plates.

Second-rate production

CONGRATULATIONS to TVB for their outstanding coverage of the 40th Macau Grand Prix, not.

The Nicam coverage in English was disgraceful, not only was it simply unavailable for the most part, was amateurish and uninformative when Murray Walker was away from the microphone, four to five hours of the theme to St Elmo's Fire was enough to drive anybody to suicide.
