About a year ago, Midland Realty said it expected property transactions in the secondary market to be the main growth driver for its business as the appetite of developers for selling their housing stock seemed to be diminishing.

The estate agency planned to open 10 new branches in the next two months - initially it planned to open only six - to meet the increased business.

Buying rights trade thrives as 90pc of East Point City sells

About 90 per cent of the 1,864 units offered at Sun Hung Kai Properties' East Point City development in Tseung Kwan O were sold over the weekend, the developer says.

According to a spokesman from property agents Midland Realty, trading of buying rights was still active yesterday, but prices for the rights had fallen to about $15,000 each from a record $460,000 last week.

High fees defended

APARTMENTS in Convention Plaza on the Wan Chai waterfront command the territory's highest management fees, at $3.70 per square foot per month, a Midland Realty survey has found.

The agent said the costly management charge was not surprising considering the comprehensive range of club facilities and hotel-style services offered at the property.

Midland pinched

MIDLAND Bank's profits came as a vast disappointment. Its seven per cent rise at the pre-tax level and its seven per cent fall at the attributable level belies what should have been a better result.

Certainly the huge 85 per cent fall in provisions for bad and doubtful debts should have acted as a nice buffer for the bank, and a cushion to the group's woes in other areas.
