You mentioned that US President Barack Obama will meet the newly-elected Chinese President Xi Jinping possibly in September.

Japan oblivious to militarism's menacing signs

It is disturbing that a country where a sense of history is so apparent can be so blind to the lessons of the past.

Until last Friday, Japan could pretend that its moribund economy, stagnant democracy and sense of drift were manageable, that over time, and with the application of painful remedies, the country would again have a future to inspire it and a present to be proud of.

The leadership in Beijing should be praised for the great contribution to Western capitalism and military supremacy.

This statement may seem paradoxical and contradictory, given the animosity of communist thinkers toward capitalism and traditional Chinese xenophobia, but recent decisions by the Chinese government actually help their professed enemies.

Japan militarism reviving

THERE is much that is sensible in the landmark call by Japan's largest and most influential newspaper for a revision of the country's 48-year-old US-dictated constitution to bring it in line with the realities of modern Japan. It is certainly time the existence of the Japanese Self Defence Forces was recognised.
