It is good to see the Consumer Council is on the mark and quickly brings us information about such things as the fact that most mineral water contains no more of the good stuff than tap water.

However, the council was beaten to it 26 years ago by journalist Chris Hilton, in an RTHK production investigative report into mineral, distilled and spring waters.

Drinks checked after scare

TWO bottled waters at the centre of a health scare in Japan are on sale in Hong Kong.

Kiwi Blue and Spa are among 10 brands of mineral water recently found to be contaminated with mould, plastic fragments and residue. The tests followed complaints by consumers of tiny, mossy pieces in a bottle of Kiwi Blue - a New Zealand label undergoing market trials in the territory.

Yili overcomes counterfeiters

SHENZHEN Yili Mineral Water Co has posted interim profits of 18.05 million yuan (about HK$16 million), an 80 per cent jump over the same period last year and which represents 50.4 per cent of its annual target.

The interim results were achieved in the face of ''serious counterfeiting'' of the company's bottled mineral water, the company said.
