ollution and unhealthy lifestyle choices have contributed to a big rise in the incidence of birth defects on the mainland in the past 15 years, experts say. Last year, birth defects were detected in 1.53 per cent of newborns in their first seven days of life, up from 1.09 per cent in 2000 and 0.87 per cent in 1996, the Ministry of Health said in September.

City on alert for bird flu as virus kills Hubei woman

Hong Kong is on alert against bird flu after a pregnant woman in Hubei province died of the infectious disease on Thursday.

The death, the first this year, was disclosed last night by the Ministry of Health, which has also notified the World Health Organisation, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

The father of a bird-flu victim who died in Jiangsu last week was confirmed to have been infected as well, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday.

The 52-year-old man, surnamed Lu, developed a fever a day after his 24-year-old son died of bird flu in a hospital in Nanjing last Sunday. The young man was the 17th person on the mainland to have died from the disease so far.
