The Toyota Noah was a big success last year, becoming Hong Kong's best-selling multipurpose vehicle (MPV). Building on that success, Toyota recently introduced an updated Noah range, with extensive body and engine modifications, to the local market.

Widening the gap

The Isis is the latest seven-seater MPV from Toyota. Launched late last year, the car was destined to be a model solely for the Japanese domestic market.

Fortunately, parallel importer Richburg Motors has made the Isis available in Hong Kong.

ULYSSES OF ancient Greece managed to cram a 10-year voyage, devoted wife, cunning suitors, bewitching sirens, pigs and assorted gods and goddesses into his Odyssey. Honda has managed to pack seven seats and a 2.4-litre engine into its third-generation MPV version.

ONE MINUTE you're young and carefree, driving a fab sports car and partying like it's 1999 and then, seemingly overnight, you morph into a grown up, with a couple of saucepan lids and a dog. GM to produce new mini-van

General Motors intends to add at least one vehicle - a mini-van, known as a U-Van - to its Shanghai production line, scheduled to begin turning out Buicks at the end of this year.

The U-Van is the name for the new generation of GM front-wheel-drive mini-vans, which includes the Pontiac Trans Sport, the vehicle named by one insider as the type that will be produced in Shanghai.

People carriers, or multi-purpose vehicles (MPV), are all the rage these days. Every major manufacturer offers one, from the pioneering Renault Espace, first launched more than 10 years ago, to the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Previa and Mazda's eponymous MPV, the bestseller in its class.
