The Japanese apparently have a fetish for clinical cleanliness. They can't seem to stand dust, let alone pigs wallowing in garbage - a common sight in Calcutta, which is rapidly degenerating into a byword for urban squalor, poverty and disease in developing countries.

Logistical nightmare for chaotic Calcutta

Succession issue for nuns

Speculation about a successor to Mother Teresa as head of the Missionaries of Charity is intensifying as a congregation of nuns prepares to discuss the issue later this month.

The timing of the conference was fixed long before the Calcutta-based Nobel peace laureate was admitted to hospital in serious condition on August 20 with malarial fever and heart problems.

Special prayers were offered at the convent of the Shamshuipo Missionaries of Charity, the local branch of the mission headed by Mother Teresa.

One of the eight nuns based at the convent said prayers had been offered up for Mother Teresa's health at a lengthened Mass yesterday.

'While we pray, we pray for Mother more intentionally,' said one Korean sister.
