The governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, recently met an old friend, Franklin D. Chu, the chief executive of Shanghai Century Acquisition, at Chu's Peak residence.

Barbour, a long-time supporter of free trade and former chairman of the Republican National Committee, was in town for meetings with Chinese government officials and local representatives.
