Nine NeoDemocrats to run in New Territories

Nine members of the NeoDemocrats, set up by a group of disillusioned young Democratic Party radicals, will team up to run in the New Territories East constituency in the Legislative Council election in September. Gary Fan Kwok-wai, a spokesman for the NeoDemocrats, will head their slate of candidates.

Cy Twombly: The Last Paintings

Cy Twombly: The Last Paintings Gagosian Gallery

As the title of the show suggests, the paintings on view at the Gagosian Gallery are the last by late American artist Cy Twombly before he died in Rome on July 5 last year, at the age of 83. Although they were created while he was suffering from cancer, the works are possibly his most fervent and playful.

Master's strokes prove too abstract for preschoolers

My four year-old daughter refers to Pablo Picasso as 'Pigasso'. It's not a problem with her enunciation because even I say Pigasso when I'm speaking to her. That's because her first exposure to the great artist came from a children's storybook, When Pigasso Met Mootisse, by Nina Laden. Laden illustrates the characters and their environment in the styles of Picasso and Matisse.

Art failure

The opening night of Art HK 12 witnessed an incredible turnout. It was hard to tell whether people came to appreciate or to acquire, but it's perhaps telling that an official T-shirt bore the statement 'Money creates taste'.

French connection allows Hongkongers to toast Spanish artist

Over 500 guests braved the rain on Friday evening to attend the exhibition opening of Picasso-Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris at Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin.

You've got to hand it to him

Zeng Fanzhi is known primarily for his Mask series of paintings. One of these, Mask Series 1996 No 6, sold for HK$75.4 million at a Christie's auction in May 2008 - a record for a Chinese contemporary artist at the time. It features eight Young Pioneers, the youth movement of the Communist Party, with red scarves and white masks.

The Museum of Contemporary Art mounted eight paintings by late artist Cy Twombly yesterday, part of a memorial exhibition that will run until October 2. 'Cy Twombly Tribute: A Scattering of Blossoms & Other Things' offers some of the eccentric painter's best works from his career of more than 60 years. Twombly (pictured) died on July 5 this year, aged 83.

Artist finds little to smile about as he commits social injustices to canvas

Since July last year, artist Dou Bu, originally from Baoji, Shaanxi province, has focused on social injustice in his oil paintings- mostly featuring prominent victims. Dou, 38, has painted a series of incidents, including the 'my father is Li Gang' car accident in which a Hebei University student was killed by a drunk driver who is the son of a district police chief.
