Police seize 'high-quality' fake 100 yuan notes

Police in Zhejiang province have seized an undisclosed number of high-quality counterfeit yuan notes said to look more realistic than any fake cash in recent memory.

Forgeries expert stayed on after nailing the 'super dollar'

Chief Inspector Michael Yu Shi-cheung, who will retire as leader of a nine-member team of Commercial Crime Bureau experts on counterfeit banknotes tomorrow after 19 years in the field, originally planned to stay for just two.

Chief Inspector Yu, known for his extensive knowledge of forged banknotes, said he had no plans to become an expert at the beginning.

Couple with fake $100 bills held

A couple have been arrested in Shamshuipo on suspicion of producing forged $100 banknotes, police said yesterday.

They said the pair - a man aged 29 and his 21-year-old girlfriend - were arrested as they carried a tin containing 430 counterfeit Standard Chartered Bank $100 bills in Yu Chau Street late on Wednesday night.

Fake notes found at race centres

A senior police officer yesterday said only a small number of counterfeit $100 banknotes are in circulation despite 14 fake $100 banknotes being found yesterday.

Deputy Police Commissioner Lau Yuk-kuen also said there was no suggestion counterfeit notes would surge in the run-up to the Lunar new year.

Counterfeit $1,000 notes discovered

More than 100 fake $1,000 banknotes have been discovered, a top counterfeit expert said.

The notes could not be easily detected under ultra-violet light and contained a metal thread like genuine notes, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Yu Shi-cheung, of the Commercial Crime Bureau, said.

HONGKONG (December 22): THE cashier of a Kowloon restaurant received a surprise when examining a ten-dollar Chartered Bank note yesterday.

The 'watermark' dropped out of it! The note was a very clever forgery, not so much with regard to the printing but with regard to the manner in which the watermark had been introduced.

An alleged member of a syndicate said to have printed forged US$100 banknotes was arrested in Macau. The man, 51, was searched when he returned from Zhuhai and three forged US$100 film plates were allegedly found in his possession.

Man held at airport after false cash haul

A MAN was arrested last week at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport for alleged possession of heroin and counterfeit bank notes, it was reported yesterday.

The semi-official Hong Kong China News Agency said a man, surnamed Zhu from Huilai county in Guangdong province, was arrested after he was caught carrying 11 grams of heroin.

If you peer closely, the light should betray features which would not be normally visible to the naked eye, like watermarks and a tiny metallic thread running through the note.
