ONLY FOOLS rush up

I was having way too much sake that night. At a noisy izakaya on a Tokyo backstreet, my friend Yuji and I kept refilling each other's cups. After we graduated from college, Yuji moved back to Japan and I to Toronto.

A summit meeting with old Fuji-san

IT'S 1.30 am. Lightning dances on Tokyo Bay as the breathless European takes off his back-pack and slumps down on the wooden bench.

With tired, dusty eyes he blinks into the darkness behind and sees, far below, the shimmering lights of a city blink back.

High in the clear night sky a line of stars point down to where the eastern capital will emerge at dawn.
