MSCI weighting change may pour funds into Taipei

Taiwan could see more international money flow into the market today as funds make last-minute adjustments to their portfolios before Morgan Stanley Capital International boosts the country's weighting on its indices, according to analysts.

Parallel indices may solve free-float weighting poser

CLSA Global Emerging Markets strategist Nilesh Jasani says it is 'pure swill' that an influential Asian index compiler would be pressured into changing the way it ranks stocks.

He does, however, think Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) may announce the creation of parallel indices that take free float into account for stock weighting.

MSCI phases in Taiwan's reweighting

Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) will gradually raise the weighting of Taiwan stocks in its Asian indices over one year and reinclude Malaysia in one tranche in May next year.

The Taiwan Index in MSCI's two leading Asian index series would be increased from 50 per cent to 100 per cent in three phases beginning at the end of May, MSCI said yesterday.

The company advanced 8.84 per cent to $8.

The switch was part of MSCI's quarterly reshuffle of its indices, effective after the close of trade on May 30.

MSCI to adjust regional indices

Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) says it will adjust some of its Asian indices to reflect the impact of foreign premiums on share prices.

The changes, to take effect at the end of next month, will affect the weightings on the Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand indices.
