Islamists clash with rivals over shape of new Egypt

Opponents and supporters of Egypt’s President Mohammed Mursi clashed in Cairo on Friday in the first street violence between rival factions since the Islamist leader took office.

Egypt’s new president on Monday issued a decree pardoning all those charged with or convicted of acts “in support of the revolution” since the beginning of the popular uprising that forced his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak, from power.

US nears deal for Egypt debt relief

The Obama administration is close to a deal with Egypt’s new government for US$1 billion in debt relief, a senior US official said on Monday, as Washington seeks to help Cairo shore up its ailing economy in the aftermath of its pro-democracy uprising.
