Dual-nationality scheme considered

Beijing is considering recognising dual nationality in a bid to attract overseas talent and investors, according to a senior official.

Vice-Minister of Science and Technology Liu Yanhua raised the idea on Tuesday, the New Express newspaper reported.

The United States is to issue guidelines to its citizens in the territory on dual nationality and consular protection. A consular spokesman said the US allowed dual nationality. The Preparatory Committee has said Hong Kong permanent residents with foreign passports must declare their nationality after 1997 or be treated as a Chinese national.

Nationality issue still unclear

I WOULD like to thank the Director of Immigration for replying to my query headlined, 'Statelessness can be avoided' (South China Morning Post, December 7).

Of course, I fully understand it is a statutory requirement under the British Nationality (HK) Selection Scheme Order 1990 to confirm with the applicant whether he, or she, has another foreign nationality or citizenship.

China should change policy

WITH reference to the perennial Hong Kong permanent residency issue, I would like to urge China to recognise dual nationality. This, I feel, would solve a lot of the difficulties.

Not lost

I WOULD like to correct a misreporting in the article headlined, 'Passport rule means staying Chinese' (South China Morning Post, April 27), which claimed I said that British passport holders under the British Nationality Scheme, 'will not be able to relinquish their Chinese Nationality even if they want to'. That is not what I said in the interview and it is not true.

Foreign passport proposal for talks

CONCERN over the right of abode of 40,000 Hong Kong foreign passport holders after 1997 will be reflected in the forthcoming Sino-British Joint Liaison Group meeting.

The Legco house committee will today endorse a paper stating its views on the issue, and the contents will be conveyed to the British Government during its negotiations with China.
