Maritime Museum move approved

The Town Planning Board yesterday approved relocation of the privately owned Maritime Museum from Stanley to pier No 8 in Central. The museum will have to carry out an air-quality assessment to ensure that a planned cafe on the roof will not be affected by emissions from ferries. The museum is now at Murray House in Stanley, but it has to leave those premises by February 2012.

It is encouraging to know that Winston Chu Ka-sun and the Society for Protection of the Harbour ('Harbour group backs museum's waterfront plan', May 12) have pledged support for the relocation of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum to Pier 8 in Central.

The oldest colonial building, Murray House, torn down in Central 16 years ago, will be resurrected in Stanley as a tourist attraction.

But the musty smell of old documents will be gone, replaced by the scent of champagne and fine foods to be offered by dozens of new restaurants and pubs.
