Blinkers put City Patrol in winning mood

IRISH winter visitor Johnny Murtagh could afford to smile after first-time blinkered City Patrol (7-1) produced a smart performance to land the fourth event yesterday.

The clear-cut win by the five-year-old initiated a winning double for veteran local trainer Wong Tang-ping, who followed up with the very good Danswinner in the top race.

Murtagh shines in Valley trial

Former Irish champion jockey Johnny Murtagh shrugged off the lingering effects of the 'flu to make a worthwhile trip to Happy Valley yesterday morning.

Murtagh was forced to forfeit two rides at the same venue on Wednesday night because of the virus but was showing no ill effects on the interesting Tambora Star, who won the first of the five grass trials.

Johnny Murtagh

Former Irish champion jockey Johnny Murtagh will ride in Hong Kong until the end of February - and he believes it will give him a chance to really prove his value here, writes Robin Parke.

Murtagh was brought in at short notice after Frenchman Eric Saint-Martin was suspended until early January and was due to ride until the pre-Christmas meeting.
