Movie review: Les Misérables

Victor Hugo's timeless story reminds us that freedom and equality come not from the generosity of the state but the hands of the people who die fighting for them. Photo: Universal Pictures

A lacklustre old-new take

Casting Kristen Stewart as the 'fairest of them all' would make sense in many contexts. Unless, that is - and pardon my crassness - you cast the perennially stunning Charlize Theron as the beauty-obsessed evil queen with a magic mirror.

The Muppets (Film)

Five minutes into The Muppets, and the thought dawns on you: there's an innate foolishness in seeing live characters singing and interacting with felt-clad puppets.

You half expect co-writer, executive producer and star Jason Segel to burst out of character, stare directly at the camera and say, 'Gotcha! I had you going there, didn't I?'.

Rocky Horror Show

If you like getting dressed up for Halloween, the Rocky Horror Show gives you the perfect excuse this year. The comedy rock show is as much about audience participation as it is the stage performance, and this year local actors will be camping it up to singalong classics such as the Time Warp and Toucha Touch Toucha Touch Me at the Arts Centre's Shouson Theatre.

Novels with animals as the central characters are notoriously difficult to pull off. Animals don't speak, or experience human emotions. Any writer who humanises animals for a novel for older readers is asking for trouble.
