Goodbye, paradise

Hong Kong is more like a shopper's hell than the paradise it's made out to be. A survey ranks our shopping streets the second-worst in the world for their unfriendly salespeople and poor hygiene.

Singapore's Orchard Road topped the list for its spotless wide pavements and varied stores. Luxembourg's Liberty Avenue came second, followed by Amsterdam's P.C. Hooftstraat.

Traders focus on service quality

In the face of greater competition in an increasingly demanding business environment, retailers are improving their quality of service, a survey has found.

The industry achieved an average score of 87.68 points out of 100 for its performance in the Hong Kong Retail Management Association survey conducted between July and September.

Mannings upgrades shops, training to ride out storm

Despite tough economic conditions, Mannings, the health and beauty specialist, plans to expand the number of its stores and keep improving its services.

'The market is difficult and increasing competition means we have to strive even harder to be the best. We will continue to grow and open more stores this year,' Mannings chief executive Gary Dunwell said.

Self-testing helps set Watson's for appraisal

Watson's has had its own mystery shoppers' programme since 1994 and, according to Agnes Chan, human resources manager, it has helped to get an objective appraisal of the effectiveness of employee training programmes.

The company employs five full-time mystery shoppers who visit each store on a weekly basis.
