Five people were killed and 23 were injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in the Nanhai Industrial Area in Foshan, Guangdong, late yesterday. Some of the injured were pedestrians hit by flying glass fragments in the explosion, which occurred at about 5.30pm. Local media reported the chemical plant had been closed for some time and was undergoing renovations when the blast occurred.

Foshan merger to create a larger city

Guangdong is to merge Foshan with four other cities to speed up urbanisation.

The State Council has approved plans to classify Nanhai, Shunde, Sanshui and Gaoming as part of Foshan, making it the third largest city in the province after Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
