14 Sharks players face suspension over banned drug use in Australia's NRL

The Sydney club's officials said they were fully assisting an investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (Asada), which came ahead of their opening game of the 2013 season against the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday.

Saints go marching on to stop Roosters crowing

St George blasted Sydney City out of the 1996 Australian Rugby League Premiership race with a 36-16 thrashing of the Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium yesterday. Unleashing a brilliant kicking game, the Dragons crushed the Roosters in decisive style. Five of the six St George tries came from kicks, with the other coming from a Roosters mistake.

Semi-final contenders Sydney Tigers and Western Suburbs both dropped out of the top eight in the Australian Rugby League premiership after defeats yesterday.

Rated at long odds to make the final series at the start of the year, the Tigers and the Magpies went into the round with high hopes and each led their respective matches for long periods.

Brisbane hold off Parramata challenge

Brisbane held off a brave Parramatta challenge to record a 30-24 Australian Rugby League win over the Eels yesterday.

In a see-sawing match the lead changed hands several times before the Broncos emerged victorious.

The Eels led 24-20 midway through the second half before two late tries got the Broncos home.

High fliers Manly and Sydney City both showed worrying second-half lapses despite recording big wins in yesterday's 10th round of the Australian Rugby League premiership. The Sea Eagles charged to a 22-0 half-time lead against Canberra and had the Brookvale crowd cheering for more.

ARL acts quickly on bias claims

The Australian Rugby League has moved quickly to defuse allegations of bias against Super League clubs.

Both the Penrith and Canberra clubs were highly critical of referees' performances after controversial losses last weekend. The Raiders had both front-rowers, Quentin Pongia and John Lomax, sent off in a 30-20 loss to St George.

Canberra's semi-final hopes suffered a double blow against a rejuvenated Parramatta in Australian Rugby League premiership action yesterday. The Eels upset the Raiders 20-14 at Bruce Stadium but the real tragedy for the home side came midway through the second half when star half-back Ricky Stuart hobbled from the field with a knee injury.

AUSTRALIA may have to play warm-up matches against Sydney clubs before rugby league's World Cup in October after being barred from playing against British teams this week.

Many Australian players, not involved in the semi-finals, finish playing for the season this week, leaving them well short of match practice for the October World Cup.

League in threat to dump three rebel clubs

THREE Australian rugby league clubs - Canberra, Canterbury and Cronulla - have been threatened with expulsion from the Winfield Cup as the superleague debate took a bitter turn yesterday.

Rupert Murdoch's News Limited shook the game to its foundations on Friday by announcing it had signed several leading players, as well as coaches of the three clubs named above.
