Taiwan authorities have strengthened security for presidential candidates in the run-up to March's election.

Annette Lu guard fired

A senior bodyguard of Taiwan's vice-president, Annette Lu Hsiu-lien, has been caught taking photos of a female colleague using the washroom.

Lieutenant Colonel Chang Wen-pin, 42, who had been the vice-president's chief bodyguard since 2000, was immediately sacked, Lee Nan-yang, spokesman for the Presidential Office, said yesterday.

Taiwan bureau denies spying accusations

Taiwan's National Security Bureau has denied it commissioned the Foundation on International and Cross-Strait Studies (Fics) to gather intelligence on the mainland.

It said it had entrusted the foundation to conduct some academic research, but that had nothing to do with intelligence gathering.

The Foundation on International and Cross-strait Studies in Taiwan, previously known as Chinese EuroAsia Foundation, yesterday denied commissioning Ching Cheong to work on any reports or projects related to the mainland or paying him to gather intelligence.
