TV contract signed

Eastern Television has signed an agreement with NBC Asia to make its affiliate, Eastern Multimedia, the exclusive Taiwan distributor for the CNBC and NBC channels. The deal is effective January 1.

Japan NBC launch

NBC Asia will launch a channel for the Japanese market with DIRECTV Japan towards the end of the year. The channel will be a digital, direct-to-home, pay- TV service.

Plaza deal

Mainland property developer Dong-Jun (Holdings) has agreed to sell 186,217 square feet of Universal Plaza in Guangzhou to an independent third party for $400 million.

Its 60 per cent owned subsidiary Newmay Development, owner of Universal Plaza, will provide $200 million in financing to the buyer and has agreed to lease the space for two years at $32 million a year.

NBC signs up cable

NBC Asia has signed deals with Sky Cable and Asian Cable Communications (ACCION) of the Philippines to boost the reach of its CNBC and NBC channels to 150,000 subscribers and 20,000 hotel rooms.

Sky is the largest cable operator in the Philippines, while ACCION is a co-operative representing 75 per cent of cable companies nationwide.

NBC in Taiwan

NBC Asia has become the first American national network to launch a country-specific channel for the Asian market with the launch of a separate satellite feed of its NBC entertainment channel for Taiwan. The 24-hour channel will carry 19 hours of Chinese sub-titling daily as part of localisation measures.

Filmate joins up with NBC

Cable distributor Filmate International has been appointed sole distributor for both NBC Asia's channels in the Taiwan market.

To mark the agreement, the broadcaster has extended its Mandarin coverage from eight to 10 hours a day on its CNBC business channel.

NBC Asia also plans to broadcast some programming from the new MSNBC channel next month.
