THE Provisional Airport Authority and construction contractors have ended their row over contract conditions which has delayed work by more than a month.

In a breakthrough after nearly five hours of talks, negotiators agreed to the setting up of an independent disputes resolution panel to settle claims as they arose.

EASTERN Century (Holdings) has confirmed it is negotiating to acquire interests in steel-related businesses in China.

A fine time at the fair

HONG Kong companies have returned from the Frankfurt International Spring Fair, this year's first major trade fair in Europe, with orders worth $560 million.

Eighty-four local firms participated in the fair, between February 19 and 22, under the auspices of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

Confirmation of principles sought

THE Chinese side produced an eight-point text on principles for confirmation with the British side before going into negotiations on the 1994-95 electoral proposal.

The points mainly sought the British side's confirmation on the various agreements, including the Joint Declaration and convergence with Basic Law, that the two sides had reached in the past.

DB owners in negotiation

HONG Kong Resorts, developers of Discovery Bay, and parent company Mingly Corp, have confirmed reports the group is holding discussions with a third party interested in acquiring an interest in assets held by the group.

The talks are in preliminary stages and there is no certainty that they will lead to a transaction being concluded, a company statement said.

One step closer to going alone

NO one ever expected the negotiations to go on so long when they first began last spring. Back then, all the talk was of how the electoral legislation had to be through the Legislative Council before the summer recess, come what may. China would not be allowed to use the talks as a stalling process, it was stressed.

BRITAIN has put forward proposals on the controversial through-train criteria for legislators to sit on the post-1997 legislature during the first day of the 16th round of talks in Beijing yesterday.

While British officials were tight-lipped, it is understood they envisage some form of oath allegiance to be made by legislators.

FREIGHT forwarder Baltrans Holdings plans to invest up to $9 million in companies in Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines to develop its regional business.

The equity investments would enhance the group's operations in those places, said chairman and chief executive Anthony Lau.
