Turandot, created for the Hong Kong Ballet in 2003 by Australian choreographer Natalie Weir, made a triumphant return to the stage last week.

One good thing about the programming of this operatic pot-pourri was the easy flow from Italian grand opera to Viennese operetta to American stage musical, skirting the usual deferential nod to Mozart that would have been politically correct but artistically bumpy.

Lavish production hits the mark

No opera, not even Aida is more grandiose and exotic than Turandot - especially the way Lo King-man has directed his latest production.

The grandeur was in the sets, the lighting and the glittering costumes.

I cannot imagine a more 'Chinese' Turandot. In his last production, Lo King-man had one scene of swordplay.

Their sudden change of heart was inspired by the BBC who fittingly chose Puccini's aria Nessun Dorma - 'None shall sleep' - as the anthem for its coverage of the 1990 Italian World Cup.
