Renesas to sell US$1.8b in shares to Japan fund, companies

Japanese chipmaker Renesas is to receive almost US$2 billion after selling shares to a government-backed fund and a group of corporates, including Micron Technology, Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor, Panasonic, Nikon and Canon. Photo: Reuters

Renesas Electronics, the ailing Japanese chipmaker, will sell at least 150 billion yen (US$1.8 billion) of new shares to a government-backed fund and customers as part of a bailout plan.

HK girls storm into semi-finals

The Hong Kong girls' team stormed into the semi-finals of the Nikon Junior and Cadet Open with two quick-fire victories at Queen Elizabeth Stadium yesterday. Ng Wing-nam, Lee Ho-ching and Guan Meng-yuan defeated South Korea B and Taiwan 3-1 and 3-0 respectively in group two. Favourites China made no mistake with 3-0 wins over South Korea A and India and are also through to the semi-finals.

SLR lookalike has a price tag that is out of focus

It looks like this year will be the year of the eight-megapixel camera.

The new Nikon Coolpix 8700, an upgrade from the popular SLR-like Coolpix 5700 (both pictured), is an eight-megapixel digital camera with 8x optical zoom with a maximum resolution of 3,264 by 2,448 pixels.
