Hiker dies after slipping into sea

A hiker died after falling into the sea and being hit by a rock yesterday on an island off Sai Kung.

Ho Yui-keung, 51, fell after a large rock he was standing on gave way. The rock, about two metres high and a metre wide, landed on him in the water.

He had been in a group of 60 on North Ninepin Island when the accident happened at 2.40pm.

Rock climber falls to his death

A middle-aged man died after falling while rock-climbing yesterday on an island off Sai Kung.

The 51-year-old was climbing rocks with three others on the North Ninepin Island when the accident happened at 2.40pm.

Boy critical after nearly drowning

A 10-year-old boy was fighting for his life after he almost drowned at a club house pool in Yuen Long.

The boy, surnamed Kwok, was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital by a lifeguard, where he yesterday remained in critical condition.

Police said the youngster had gone swimming with a relative at the club house of Grand Del Sol in Fung Cheung Road.

Sailors jump overboard to escape 'pirates'

Three sailors dived into the sea off the Ninepin islands yesterday after their vessel was intercepted by gun-wielding men they took to be pirates.

Police are investigating the mysterious incident. Nothing was stolen and the captain of the cargo vessel, who did not abandon ship, was last night being questioned.

Master feared drowned

The master of an Aberdeen-based trawler, 46, was feared drowned after he fell overboard while casting a fishing net off the Ninepin Group of islands. Marine Police launches, a fireboat, helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft were sent to the scene to search for the man.

Ship sinks off Ninepin Group

Sixteen mainland sailors and more than 30 containers were thrown overboard when a 711-tonne vessel, the Shun Lung, sank off the Ninepin Group of islands yesterday shortly after 5pm.

Fishermen forced to pay up at pistol point

Fishermen held at gunpoint were ordered to pay $3,000 or surrender their licences after their vessels were yesterday intercepted by a mainland speedboat off the Ninepin Group.

One fisherman said the men aboard the boat were all wearing 'green-coloured uniforms'. One drew a pistol and told him to surrender his licence when he was unable to deliver the full amount, he added.
